Tulip tour 2007

In saturday may 5th the second "North-Dutch Tulip tour" was planned. But due to the warm spring, and the fact that on the first "Tulip tour" almost all the tulips were gone, the tour was rescheduled two weeks earlyer, to saturday, April 21, hoping for a colorfull spectacle.

From 10:00 was the gathering iat hotel "de Posthoorn" in Schagen. For a ride trought North-Holland a fine starting point, but from Ede over 140 km. away.

It was cold , that morning so early, a bare 3 degree celsius. I put the winter lining in my jacket, and so I started at 8:15 my CX. The last evening I had fuelde the "Red Rscal" up, so I didn't had to stop. Trough Ede, towards the A30, then Barneveld, Nijkerk, into the polder to Lelystad. from the bridge across the Nijkerkernauw al the road is max speed 100 km/h, for me and my CX a good cruising speed. At Lelystad I could choose : around or across Lelystad ? I became slowly a more experienced driver now, up to the point that a highway is not scarry anymore. So I choose to go around Lelystad, the A6, then the N307 across the locks, onto the dike, N302.

The length of the dike is 31 km. and the max speed is 100 km/h. One small car in front of me was kind enough to use a parking space. And then I had the joy of riding a empty road ahead, nothing pushing behind me. Far away I could see the headlights from a car, in front of me, nothing. Gently I turned the throttle, until te speedometer pointed at 100. Nothing more to do, than enjoy the sun, wind and the view acros the "IJselmeer". Cormorants on bald branches, black spicks on white bleached wood. Sun flickering into the water, and silver lines until the horizon. Way to soon I saw Enkhuizen, countless yachts in the harbour, and then the aquaduct. Now to get to Hoorn. But on this stretch of road all the spare trafficlights in North-Holland were gathered. Start-stop-halt-start-stop. This part of the N302 took awhile to travel. But in the end I reached the A7, wich I followed for just 3 km. and exited it to follow the N241 for the last 22km to Schagen. In the Flevopolder I had a taste of flowersplendor, and here more and more fields were blooming. The temperature became more pleasant, and finally, after a refuelling stop I reached "de Posthoorn" around 10:40 By the looks of the large number of motorcycles I was at the right place. Inside it was seeing old friends, new friends, and a cup of coffee. Time for a short speach by the organisation, paying the bill and onto the bike.

A bit of panic, for my keys were gone. Not at the table, not in my pockets, not even in the ingnition : help! My pockets are empty, not in my jacket, and in a few minutes they leave without me, and then.....

But the keys lay on my saddle, waiting for me to find them.

And so I could, like all the others, get on my bike an start with the Tulip tour 2007

... onto the bike ...

... start ...

In a long row we left Schagen. I found myself in the seventh position. I would rather been trirth or fourth. My experiences from the far past concerning group-riding were not overall possitiv. The rules about riding in a groep, as explained on the website were not gfollowed : groups from max. ten motorcycles..... I got a bit nervous, wich, as it turned out later, was totally out of place.

The first trafficlight got me a "what now to do" feeling. As I should stop, cold I find the other back ? I didn't had TomTom, or even a description with me. On the edge of the orange/red light change I slipt across the crossing. The light just went red..... Ooops ! A hundred meters further the front-rider stopped. AaaH! That's good. So it goes around here. No everyman for himself, but we wait for eachother. I could have known, couse this is the nicest motorclub in the Netherlands, the Dutch CX-Club!!.

The first part of the tour takes us fast out of Schagen, in a southern direction. Quickly we saw the first blooming fields. Red, yellow, purple and lila between withe and rose and orange. An overwhelming display of colors. Some roads were narrow, a challange for rider and bike, but all went well.

... the first part ...

Many turns and riderskills further we arrived at Callantsoog. Here a one and a halve hour break was planned. The motors were parked side by side, and the first experienceds were told. "Wonderfull", "Nice route" and more like that. Now we were in Callantsoog, and the plan was to have a break.

... in Callantsoog ...

And then, what to do ? After some waiting I thought "Maybe you will stand here forever, but I'm going to find some coffee! " I was not the only omne with that idea, and Henk walked with mee. On the other side of the square we found 'Brasserie 't Dorpsplein', with seats out of the wind and in the sun. Coffee was order, with a snack on the side, and Henk lit a cigar. All together live was sweet. Sun, motorcycles and coffee. And where one motorrider leap onto the terras, all the rest follows.Feeding the sparrows, telling tales, it was a pleasant way to take a brake.

The second part of the route leads us from Callantsoog to the fortress Kijkduin. Not directly, that's not fun. The second part showed us some of the very narrow roads that even a tourist don't use. Our route was put together end tripple checked by guys that klive there, and they knew all the nice and beautifull rows there. Again a festival of colors was shown onto the fileds. Almost endless fields of blue, red and oranje, yellow and white and all the colours in between. This time I rode as fifth, and that was much better for me. I still am a bit of new-rider in some ways, and will remain that for a few thousand kilometers.

... the second part ...

In the route there was a very smal ferry. Besides a small car there was nearly enough room for eight motorcycles. We were warned to hold the fare, one euro, ready, couse the crossing would take only a minute or so. A few hundred meters further we waited for the others. Not that much tulips here, besides one small field, far away. I took a quick picture.

... a quick picture ...

Our eight bike were parked side by side on the edge of the road. Enough room around us, we thought. It was, but not much. A large agriculture vehicle, with a large 'thing' attached front and rear passed the group. I saw it happen, almost, and hold my breath. It missed the bikes by not much more than a hair. The owner stood a few minutes frozen, when he saw his bike almost wrecked, and to be honest, me to. I beleive there was not more than half an inch between the CX and that large, loudly ongoing vehicle.

... side by side ...

After the rest of the group was transported by the ferry, we continued the ride to end in Huisduinen, near Fort Kijkduin. The Fort was build on the orders of Napoleon, but not lonmger a military object, and houses a museum and a aquarium.

... Fort Kijkduin ...

Here the CX-es were placed side by side. I special sight, so many motors, basicly the same, in so many different shapes. Not two the same, just as the tulips. So many types, so many coloers, yet the same basicform.

... same basicform ...

Not all the CX-es fitted on the parking sapce. The others stood a little away, all the CX in a row. The Deauville en the Goldwing belong in the line, couse we are all motorryders.

... motors ...

Gideon tried to copy 'Baron von Munchausen', the brave baron that flew om a cannonball the spy on the enemy. But he was riding up the cannonball, not underneath it...

The scene had changed while we where away. The terraces were filled, and I got the feeling that all those people didn't like those "noisy motordevils". After a warn goodbye, and a thanks to the people that put the ride together I started the bike again. First refuel, then to home. The same road, in opposite direction. A little more traffic, but still good weather and blooming flowers at the side of the road.

... same road ...

... blooming flowers ...

At Enkhuizen I got a proble,. Just after the aquaduct I drove into a swarm of little flies or mosquitoe. Whitin two second my windscreen, and my helmets vizor was covered in dirty, thin, black stripes. My first impuls was to wipe the stuff off, but no, that was not a good idea, because it would decrease the sight on the raod. The solution was to find an gasstation. But theres none on the dike between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. The fly problem kept me occupied, but not so much that I didn't enjoy the ride. At Lelystad I luckely passed the lockes just before the light changed to red. If you're stopped there, you have to wait at least five minutes. Now what ?
I choose the 'normal' way back. maybe on the A6, riding towards Harderwijk, there was a gasstation. But no, there was not. Only kilometers away, near Harderwijk, where the N302 combines with the N305, I found a gasstation. Time to clean up bike and helmet.

After a short conversation with a woman on a Harley I contued the ride home. Still about 60 or 70 kilometers to go, and i choose nit Nijkerk, but Harderwijk. There was an aquaduct, as an replacement for the two bridges across the locks. No problem, only the sun was getting very low this time of day. Riding on, I got to Ermelo, Putten, and I feld almost at home again. At Barneveld the highway A30 started, and I toke advantage of it, al the way down to Ede where it connects to the A12. Exit Ede was only two kilometers away, and a few minutes later I parked the CX behind our house.

I looked to see how much I had travelled this day. 422 was on the tripmeter. Friday I drove straight form the gas-station to home. That meanth a total of 419 kilometers for this Saturday alone......
