A windscreen for the CX |
After a short ride on the A30, where I go to build up my highway
experience, the thought about a windscreen come up again. Not because
the helmet blows away from my head, but because at current wind force 5
I myself are almost blown away from the Honda.
That same ride lets me doubt about a fairing. At this time the CX is sensitive to
side-wind, and with such a surface I suppose it gets worse. |
I found out, that if I don't build a fairing on the Honda, a windscreen
may be a good solution. But I have to keep in mind that I buy a screen
that has two mounting points on the handlebar, and no mounting points at
the headlight.
|
On a sunday afternoon I am browsing through the internet, more or less
without a goal. Fairing and mounting problems, screens in shapes and
sizes, and much, much more passes by. 'Marktplaats', the Dutch Honda CX-v club, severall dealers and more are browsed. 'Speurders.nl' was next. The search for fairing cam up with no new matches, 'scherm' (screen) returned only a few results. 'Windscherm' (windscreen) had more results, but al those screens where mounted on motorcycles. All ....? In the sub-category 'onderdelen' (parts) I found an add that was more interesting. |
|
The windscreen was ready, the prices was known. It looked good, and I
thought I coeld get it onto the CX. I looked (of course) at his GS500,
that just was repainted with a spraycan! The original mint-green was
sprayed over with a nice darkblue, much more fitting to the bike. After
I looked at some paintings in the livingroom (very nice) I left the
house, put the screen om the back seat of the car, and went home. Back home I tried the screen on to the CX. And it looked well, very well. When i started to screw on the clamp on the steer in encountered a small problem.. The left-side is okay, enough place to place the clamp. But on the right-side..... |
On the right side the front-brakehandle is placed, and the brake
fluid-cilinder. The brake-tube connection is a large obstacle. How I turn
en try, I can't get enough space for the clamp. I get a wrong angle, or a
spave from about two centimeters. The only solution is to use a longer
hexagon socket head screw, and a spacer. With that I can cross the
two centimeters. Tomorrow, when the shops open. Until then, patience is the word. Riding a motorcycle has nothing to do with speed, but is much more about patience, lots of patience...... The next morning, monday, i am at the hardware store. Srews, nuts, bolts and yes, hexagon socket head screw, size M8 and length 50mm. Spacer there are none, but fot that I have the solution. As soon as I am back home, I start. First I create a spacer out of an old iron tube. This fits great. Now I am able, with 2x 2mm clearing, to fix the windscreen onto the handlebar. |
The clamp on the handlebar has 2mm margin under the brake cilinder, and the support rod from the screen has a 2m margin above the brake tube. The left-side is mounted in the same way, to hold the windscreen evenly balanced. When everything is solid bolted on,it is time for the best part of working an your bike.....the testride. |
The testride goes smoothly. The wind, although not so strong as
two days ago, has less grip onto me, and flows mostly to the side. The
little windscreen does what I expected it to do : it keeps the wind
away from the larger part of my body. The shape is good, for it fits the
lines of the CX fine.

Let's go for the next project. |
